With the moon rising over the ocean and wind roaring with excitement, another BEYOND THE BRAIN celebration swirled out of the mists of our imaginations into a tangible vision of incredible lushness and luminous community spirit. To add the icing to this magick pudding was the special appearance of psychedelic visionary, Terence McKenna. Continuing the innovative traditions of the Northern New South Wales psychedelic gatherings that we have chanced upon before, this party was breathtaking in its scale, depth and in the intensity of its creativity. And word had spread well, with this BEYOND THE BRAIN being even bigger and more packed than ever before; a liquid anarchy brandishing its own brand of immanentizing the eschaton. The foundations for creative chaos were in place. As a space, the Epicentre may not be "perfect" for everyone's taste - it was formerly a whaling station - but as far as providing interesting, stimulating and uplifting experiences for large numbers of people in a friendly safe environment it carries off this function well. There were many different spaces, completely different looks, covering diverse tastes in psychedelic electronica and art. These included: the "hard-sweaty-sex, dark, sick and pure, goa-core" dance floor; the "funky woobly woobly shroom room"; and particularly the Star-Trek alien market place chill area, complete with a giant silver Phoenix hanging from the roofless rafters. The main room which featured twisted, dark and hard trance (dubbed by silly conversations during the night as the "pure sick room") involved the marauding mayhem of local sound wizards Mandy and Nick Taylor, and Tsuyoshi Suzuki from Japan. The music was thoroughly infectious, and the energy in this room was beyond belief - a lot of whoops, yells and growls emanated from this underworld - and it was packed right up until the last note struck its searing spark. This sacred space was painted entirely black and had a 22 pointed star on the floor - the 22 paths of the Tree of Life, perhaps. It seems that whoever was behind this was a Qabalist. The ceiling was covered in "spider webs" and a cross of white material was hanging over the star on to which a series of symbols were projected, and which also captured the stark lighting. This at first consisted purely of white light beams upon a black background. At the beginning of the event, it was pretty dark-ambient/laid back and this amazing lighting clearly distinguishable. The atmosphere and energies in this room were unlike any we have experienced before. We are keen travellers to many forest gatherings where the atmosphere can get very magickal and very "darkly" weird at times, but this room was incredibly orgiastic in intent it seems. The energies bubbled like an erupting volcano as the nonstop mayhem of belting beats rang out their relentless toll. The room was packed like a slaughterhouse with flailing limbs and animalistic utterances. The temperature was glowing hot and people were not only dancing with each other but slipping around on each other. Tickling stimulation all over. It's surprising that no one ended up naked. We were writhing and dripping back into the primeval ooze, covered in spider webs as well :-), conjuring the energies of Azathoth as we dissolved into the void. Mad! It felt, too, like an alien corroboree, maybe there was a vigorous didgeridoo in the mix somewhere . . . Mitch could imagine this as the latest in a sequence of dance events that preceded the white settlement of Byron Bay, stretching back into the dreamtime . . . Nick Taylor's set was a standout with sounds that were somewhere between hardcore and goa where the flouro pink has faded into a somewhat nastier shade. Some of Nick Taylor's signatures were evident - such as the use of a guitar-like distorted-chord sound that drives the tracks along. Tsuyoshi Suzuki's set also lent toward the hardcore realm with booming hardcore 150 bpm sounds and rapid analog swells building through the noise. Excellent stuff. In contrast the performance room was all in white with funky hip grooving tunes. It also featured huge paper-mache eye-balls with wings, and was known as the "mushroom room" due to the presence of large soft sculptured mushrooms of various heights up to eight or nine feet tall. A very unusual "garden". There was an eclectic combination of sounds and performances in here throughout the evening. Funky hip swinging layered sounds that you just had to curve your body into. We loved the contrast between the giant stomp sweat and the laid back groove that slid around this space. At one point in the evening, Pip played some 70s disco loungarama while a guy on the dancefloor was wearing these furry, black & white cow print flares, doing a disco strut to the music. We didn't really notice his face, but his legs were amazing! We especially loved the trapeze artist in the full body skin tight fluorescent alien outfit who performed feats of strength and agility on the trapeze right in front of our noses. The array of amazing performers became a continuous stream of wonderland delight. There was the fan dance, & the guy with the fluorescent twirling sticks that seemed to create a 3-dimensional image of lights with his staffs. At one point, Mitch noticed a curtain, hiding one corner of this room, bearing what looked like the Extropian logo: a five-pointed star, with arrows spiraling out. The curtain was opened and the first person asked if they knew who had painted the logo. They didn't know. It eventuated that the person questioned *lived* in the Epicentre. The thought was boggling, as we wondered what it was like to have thousands of people running about inside one's home, most of them oblivious to your existence... However, of course, this was the night that Terence McKenna came and the psychonauts who live at the Epicentre lit a few fires in their psychic garden and invited everyone in. The garden/chill area was roofless and reminded us of arriving at a friendly planet market place after being beamed down from a spaceship. The area had plants, straw, ropes, hammocks, fires, hanging space sculptures and all sorts of visual distraction looming at every angle. There was a great food stall at the very back with very nice guarana balls, chai tea, etc. (The guarana balls being very much appreciated!) At the top end of this space was an Egyptian looking dais with obelisks rising from either side. On the walls were some very ornate Egyptian profile figures. The little alcove was reminiscent of some sort of ancient tomb. A huge plush mushroom was placed in front of this on which TMcK could plant his behind, and they seated him under a giant silver phoenix whose wings were in rotting tatters and who soared down from the roofless girders of the garden. One striking memory of that night is Terence sitting on this mushroom pedastal, reciting `The Jabberwocky' from `Alice through the Looking Glass', with the light of the fires and a full moon that illuminated the space gleaming off the silver phoenix. Terence McKenna finally emerged at around 1am and when he started talking we found a spot on the ground & let him take us away. An amazing voice - like the American comedian Paul Linde! There were three stages to his talk, punctuated by musical interludes: first he spoke about The Mushroom as an entity with a personality and with which one can communicate; then about the DMT experience; and then finally about the Eschaton: "where we came from and where we are going". He was accompanied by a spontaneously formed group called Pangalacticspermia who produced some excellent world music/space ambience during and after his talk. He was filmed close up by a woman who seemed to be a one-person TV crew - completely decked out in camera gear and other equipment. After Terence departed we bantered ("What does your T-shirt say?" "`Science fiction'. What does yours say?" "`I Screw Aliens.'" "Do you think that's what they'd want?" "That depends on what they're into.") "So you're DMTV", Mitch said. She liked the name. Down the corridor from the chill space was another white room with what looked to be Internet-linked computers and a video projection screen and mellower music. This space included the amazing visual work of Nic Touches Clouds and perhaps the best visual displays we've ever witnessed - fading from Mandelbrot Sets to computer rendered models of molecules and a variety of images between a kaleidoscope of colours. Other incredible sights we encountered included the giant alien creatures: 2 metre stilts attached to all four of a human's limbs who then walked around on all fours. The limbs were covered in round silver tubing with a wire frame head with half a dozen cones sticking out of it, some flashing, some not. We managed to catch the alien creature in both the "sick and pure" room and the "woobly woobly funk shroom" room. It somehow managed to get onto the dance floor while Tsyuoshi was playing, and then proceeded to talk to us. Or maybe that was the music. In the shroom room it placed an appendage on another performers head and sucked out their brains. The hallways at this event, leading from one strange foreign land to another, were equally as magnificent as the various rooms. In particular, there was the fluoro hallway!! A black light corridor that was decorated the whole way with fluorescent bric a brac & trippy art. As Andrew said, throughout the night it got harder & harder to walk along in there, as the corridor just went on and on, as did the flow of colorful people tramping through it . . . There was also a darker hallway and its riches emerged at the light of dawn including Qabalah "tagging" and a number of unusual horned entity pencil drawings. For the outside explorers during the night, the beach across the road from the Epicentre was very beautiful under the full moon - it was like twilight all night. Particularly memorable at one point was walking on the windy beach under a full moon and looking back to the Byron lighthouse. This experience was aptly named BEYOND THE BRAIN, and very applicable to the massive efforts of the organizers and artists who go about creating these odysseys of sight and sound and jaw-dropping experience. It was a breathtaking spectacular of psychedelic energy amazing enough to have attracted creatures from all around the galaxies, and to have conjured those energies and entities who dwell in the cracks of our minds. * RAYA: an open forum of sounds, video and people ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 1997 23:47:03 +0100 From: Gojko Adzic Subject: textic ## From: Bozo Krstajic ## P.S.
