## too wired to sleep, so i thought the folks back home might appreciate ## an update on how good ol' british techno goes down abroad. ## ## in new york there were separate orb and chemical brothers shows, but ## here in san francisco we got two for the price of one. or one and a ## bit for the price of two... at $25 a ticket plus $3 'convenience' fee ## thanks to bass(tard) tickets, this seemed like a bagain for both bands ## so i went early with high hopes. ## ## time for a joke: ckedbastard: 'yes we have tickets for the prodigy, ## tithat'll be thirty bucks' ## ## ## punter: 'wow, that's expensive - i think i'll just give it a miss and ## stay at home' ticketbastard: 'ok, that'll only be ten.' ## ## henry j kaiser looks like a basketball stadium inside, with a huge with ## a second layer of seats all around. there was plenty of room - though ## the floor was pretty full. i was surprised it didn't sell out, but ## there were a few thousand people there. they seemed to be the usual ## cross section of techno types and students, if a little younger than ## i'm used to in the uk. maybe that's just me getting old though... ## despite the large arena the atmosphere was friendly and lively. ## ## the stage had huge projection screens and a decent varilight show and ## a _huge_ speaker stack. we marched in, straight to the ## refreshments for...popcorn and water. there was no bar. i stood slack ## jawed in disbelief. i refused to acknowledge the fact 'if there's no ## beer, i'm leaving' i foolishly promised and marched around in earnest. ## to no avail. as we entered the doors into the auditorium, we passed ## huge signs 'it is an offence to smoke in the theater' (sic). hmmm, ## this should be an interesting experience i thought. ## ## ## at 9pm sharp a little man with a multi-coloured pointy hat came on ## stage, and the film show started. rantings from 'revelations' in a ## nice manchester accent filled the room, over a bouncy techno beat. ## apparently, barcodes are quite possibly the mark of the beast, and the ## devil certainly has all the best tunes. a few rows in front of me a ## tall thin chap wearing a london underground t-shirt orchestrated the ## techno-pogo for the crowd; his back to the band yet perfectly in sync ## with the flailing dreads of dr. patterson's sidekick on stage. the ## crowd responded with similar enthusiasm to the man leaping manically on ## ocerinflated air whatevers. ## ## toxygene brought cheers of approval, and little fluffy clouds hoots ## of recognition. but all to soon it was over. just four songs. even ## with great visuals this was not enough, but no amount of clapping and ## chistles would coax the band to return. ## ## the intermission was filled by some dj-ing. robbie, scott and ## gavin hardkiss are listed on my flyer. sadly, some guy thought it ## would be a great idea to play guitar on top of a guy dj-ing. sadly, ## their creativity was limited to accompanying the wah geetar on the ## stone roses' fool's gold. thankfully, soon they were both faded out. ## ## 'the brothers gonna work it out' said the film loops on the huge screen ## and the soulful voice over the pa above a gentle guitar, and the two ## nerdy brothers skipped up to their desks onstage to a wild welcome. a ## few swirls for a buildup, a nod of the head and flick of hippy hair and ## the room was frozen for a second in a strobeflash as the biggest beats ## to hit town kicked off at deafening volume and hundreds of hands ## punched the air. relentless chemical beats pounded incessantly as the ## 'best of' list was rolled out - block 'rockin beats giving way to more ## and more old and new favourites. for over half an hour there was not a ## second that wasn't filled with huge drums and sceeching guitar/filter ## resonance at deafening volume. the energy was immense, even when the ## tempo slowed for the more hip-hop beats, there was no let up. the ## lords of the parametric equaliser and big builds caused the crowd again ## and again to jump around with ease. later more gaps appeared as the ## material became less lifted straight from the albums. ## ## at times they seemed to lose the plot, with meandering passages of ## ambience that was too far removed from the adrenalin rushed beats to ## make a coherent set, but this was quickly forgotten as the next even ## bigger drums kicked in to pound your senses. ## ## they finished with a fine rendition of setting sun, lounder and longer ## than ever and were persuaded to come back for an encore of what can ## only be described as medieval techno. by this time i was ready to ## surrender, but it appeareed they wree just having too much fun playing ## with an exceptional sound system that they taunted the crowd till they ## kept screaming for more. and more they gave until they were in danger ## of outstaying their welcome. when finally the end came, we shuffled ## outside to a huge traffic jam and a world that sounded like you were ## listening to it though a pair of toilet roll tubes. i think i only ## lost the top 3 or 4khz, so it was well worth it in the end. ## ## ## oh well, time for bed - it's 3am, my ears are still ringing and i'm ## still recovering from the night before's party. this featured a ## performance by the 'united satanic apache front' which that included a ## woman cutting with a scalpel round the outline of a pentagram tattooed ## on a guy's back, then squatting over him and [i can't go on...] ...then ## she strapped on a bottle of southern comfort, and [no, that's enough of ## that. what these americans will do for attention...] ## ## ## t.i.p. tour umm, this is a real longshot, but if anyone's going to the ## t.i.p. party on may 16th here and wants to meet up then mail me. :-) ## ## ## "girlfriend makes mixmag shock" after being accosted at metalheadz at ## the blue note by a photographer for mixmag back in january, it seems ## they finally used a photo, see page 14 of the april issue! ## ## ## the influx continues it seems that the good ol' american indie ## shoegazer showcase 'lollapalosers' has been overrun this year - the ## orb, orbital, prodigy and tricky are all playing - seems like it might ## even be worth going. ## ## that's all for now...till next time... :-) ## ## p.s. ## Zarp wrote >Subject: The digest from afar ## spot on. :-) ## ## ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ End of INSOMNIA Digest ********************************************** +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ insomnia@dv.co.yu, mail lista o YU tehno sceni +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ -------------------------------------------------------- 51101.6 --
