More of the deep, dubby, warped house that Weatherall is known for these days, particular highlights being 'Turn The Filter On', a gorgeously deep groove that I could listen to all night, and 'Plunge', a kick-drum-free number that harks back to 'Haunted Dancehall'-era Sabres stuff. Abacus - Analog Trax Vol 1 (Guidance) A somewhat disappointing EP, following the amazing releases on 83 West and Prescription which brought Austin Bascomm into the public eye. He seems to be suffering from Glenn Underground syndrome - using the same sounds and ideas for every track. Having said that, it's worth checking for the downtempo delights of 'Taxi Blues'. Impossible Beings - Incredible Rubberband Man (The End) Asad Rizvi, one of the new breed of London tech-house producers championed by the likes of Colin Dale, turns out two minimal groovers for Mr C's label. Nothing particularly mindblowing, just solid floor- friendly workouts with enough going on to maintain the listener's interest too. Fandango Widewheels & Huggy Bear - 80s/90s (20:20 Vision) The title cut gets my vote for one of the freshest cuts of the year, a mental mash-up of electro, house, jazz and raw anaolgue funk with tongue firmly in cheek. A totally infectious groove which may be a little cheesey for some but which makes me shake my arse. All the purists should also check this for the sneaky inside track, 'Bozz-eyed', a totally unexpected tech-funk workout which sounds like Rob Hood meeting Jay Denham and fucking with the formula. Superb record, from a consistently excellent label. Wulf & Bear & Random Factos - Doublepacks Vol 2 (20:20 Vision) Again from the 20:20 camp, yet another pseudonym for Ralph Lawson and Huggy with a very interesting package. 'Needsy's Run' is a *long* excursion into deep dubbed-out house, a bit like Maurizio but with subtle string chords and more percussion. Then there are two mixes of 'Spanish Fly', an immaculately-produced, floor-friendly, semi-disco groove. The package is rounded off with 'Siam', 'Turn' and 'Lunar Eclipse', which have a very experimental rhythmic edge and unusual time signatures. Quality. Various - Soma 50 (Soma) What can I say? It'd be worth paying twice as much for Maas' 'Fallen Arches' alone, the most beatiful piece of music I've heard for a long time, a totally amazing track which firmly places Ewan Pearson alongside the likes of Carl Craig in my book - that Juno melody line gives me goose-pimples every time. The rest of the LP's pretty wicked as well, particularly the offerings from Russ Gabriel, Envoy and Rejuvination. All in all, this is a wonderful collection of haunting, emotional, melodic techno, proving Soma can hold their own against the Detroit legends, without necessarily following blindly in their footsteps. Circulation - Chapter One (Heard) The Global Communication boys snap up Joshua, whose EP on Balance last year was very impressive, and let loose three more exquisite house gems. I haven't got the titles, but the main cut does it for me the most, a sublime mid-tempo disco groove, with tinkling pianos that wash over you, infectious string lines and Eastern vocal snippets. Classy late-night house for discerning dancefloors. Motorbass - Ezio Remix (white label) Herbert and Cassius get their hands on this, taken from the amazing 'Pansoul' LP. Herbert steals the show with a less minimal affair than usual, including a bassline to die for and his trademark funk-fuelled off-kilter rhythms. A total dancefloor killer in the right hands, this is one of the best things he's done since the awesome 'Part Three' on Phono. Cassius' mix is a little faster and doesn't work quite as well, but this is a package well worth checking when it comes out. Chris Nazuka - Experience (Classic) Been waiting for this for months, after a mate picked up the limited release a while back, and it's well worth it. Derrick Carter lends a hand, and the 'kiss the sky' vocals add another level to an otherwise good but unremarkable groove. Long, deep, bassy, hypnotic - what more could you want from one of the best house production teams in the world? DJ Assassin - The Stalker (Ugly Music) Another fine example of UK tech-house, this time from the Brighton stable which gave us Justin David. Their first (I think) release since the awesome Swag mixes of 'Jazz Journey' on Phono, and they come back in style. Tough swinging beats with a raw US feel, deep synth riffs and meandering flutes all swim around to produce a long ans absorbing piece of music with a very fresh and original approach. Seek out. Phew. BTW: the three of you waiting for tapes from me, sorry to have taken so long, but I've had exams and shit. They'll be with you by the end of the month, I promise :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 11:42:34 +0200 (MET DST) From: Gordan Paunovic Subject: Re: Insomnia Rave > > Pitanja?
