From: Tom Churchill Saturday 24th - Tribal Gathering ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Arrived slightly later than planned at about 5, due to shit traffic on the way. First impressions - significantly bigger than previous years (almost twice as many people as 1995), but the overall atmosphere was a little bit restrained, and corporate sponsorship leapt out at every turn. Carl Cox was playing Basement Jaxx and Green Velvet on the outdoor system as we walked around the site, checking out the different tents. Gave the happy hardcore, trance and epic house tents a wide berth, and spent most of the night in either Trans Europe (where we saw 2 Lone Swordsmen, Kraftwerk and Masters at Work) or Detroit (where we saw Terrence Parker, D Wynn, Kevin Saunderson, Innerzone Orchestra, Juan Atkins, T1000 and Mills). For the rest of the afternoon and evening, we pottered around catching bits of various things, eating food and skinning up. Adam F's live set in the drum & bass tent was wicked, giving me the first rush of the day with the bass on 'Metropolis', but from then on the tent became impossibly rammed and uncomfortable - they gravely underestimated the popularity of this music. Caught the end of D Wynn's set in the Detroit tent which had everyone rocking - similar in style to Derrick Carter but a bit less garagey, loads of EQ tricks. Kevin Saunderson took over, starting off nicely but dropping the Van Helden mix of 'Sugar Is Sweeter' caused us to leave - call me a purist but that wasn't really what I was after. Andy Weatherall and the Two Lone Swordsmen sound system were at it in Trans Europe all day, so we had caught a bit of chilled dubby stuff in the late afternoon which was quite pleasant. By the time we returned at 8, he'd moved on to deep house a la Bloodsugar, which made shuffling around near the beautifully clean and loud speakers compulsory. All their own tracks were being done live, with other records in between and samples over the top. Finishing with 'The Illuminator' from UR at 9PM, the tent became silent for the hour leading up to Kraftwerk's appearance. Luckily we secured a good patch quite near the middle of the tent, which got absolutely rammed from 9.30 onwards. The atmosphere and feeling of expectation was phenomenal - by 10 the sides of the tent had been taken up and thousands of people were gathered around it as far as the eye could see. When the first vocodered voices rumbled from the speakers, the crowd went nuts. The beats from 'Numbers' kicked in and the curtain went back. The awesome stage set-up and video screens, coupled with the awesomely loud system and euphoric crowd, made it an experience I'll remember for a long time. No surprises music-wise, just a mixture of originals and updated versions from 'The Mix', but played loud everything sounded amazing, especially 'Radioactivity' and 'Pocket Calculator'. After this, it was straight back to the Detroit tent to check out Carl Craig's live set and ingest some chemicals. He actually performed as Innerzone Orchestra, with Francisco Mora and Rodney Whitiker on double bass and percussion, and Carl on electronics. It was marred slightly by problems with the sound - it seemed to take a while for them to get into it, and it wasn't loud enough, but it was far and away the bravest and most interesting music of the weekend for me. It would have been easy for Carl to just bang out floor-friendly stuff like 'Jam The Box' and 'Climax', but he decided to go for something far more challenging and less obvious, which earns him a lot of respect from me. Juan Atkins followed, kicking off with 'Stardancer' pitched up, and dropping classic techno like 'Game One' and 'Codebreaker'. Still far too quiet though. Meanwhile Masters at Work were on in Trans Europe, and were really good when we wandered through - a lot deeper and less garagey than I had expected. I could have happily stayed for three hours, but there was too much other stuff to do! Even so, the superb sound system made dancing like a bastard for half an hour compulsory. After another wander and chatting to a few interesting strangers outside, we decided to try the Planet Earth tent for Daft Punk. After a few slightly patchy hours it was a much-needed kick up the arse - good, loud sound, just enough space to dance comfortably, warm but not too sweaty. They went for a harder approach than last year, but 'Burnin' and 'Musique' had my arse shaking nicely. It's a bit of a blur around this time, but I have vague memories of checking out a bit of Reprazent and DJ Rap from the doorway of the drum & bass tent at some point. After T-Power in the Pacific tent it was back to Detroit to see DJ T1000 (Alan Oldham, who had also been 'hosting' the tent for the whole event in fine style). We caught the last half hour of his set, which was excellent funky techno, building it up nicely for Mills, who absolutely rocked it. After a slightly disappointing couple of performances recently, he more than made up for it with one of the best sets I've ever heard. Slightly housier and less brutally hard than usual, he took over smoothly and took the crowd on a two-and-a-half hour journey with his usual breathtaking tricks and captivating moves. The environment was perfect - the tent was packed but there was enough room to dance comfortably and the sound was perfect. We had a brief break around 7.30 to see a bit of DJ Cam playing some classic hip-hop in the Pacific tent, then it was straight back to finish the night off in style. We eventually made it back to the car, had some fruit and vitamins, chilled for a couple of hours in the sunshine, then crawled out of the car park and down to Greenwich, via a long stop at the services... Highs: - - meeting up with loads of people from Cardiff unexpectedly during the night at various points. Very spooky when you consider the chances of running into someone you know amid 40,000 constantly moving people, let alone about twenty of them. - - Kraftwerk, Carl Craig and Jeff Mills. There were many others, but I enjoyed these the most. - - the usual mad mix of people from all over the country gathered together. It seemed slightly more reserved and check-shirty at times but there were still enough nutcases to make it fun :) Lows: - - it was freezing cold at night. - - some of the tents were too packed. - - the sound quality/volume wasn't good enough all the time. - - traffic in and out of the site was a nightmare. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 18:45:52 +0200 From: vladimir janjic Subject: Re: Chalange fucken day Ivan Hrasovec wrote: da ce da se proda za ono sranje zvano Dan Chalange Izazova nisam verovao...Mogli su barem na vrata da okace neko obavestenje o otkazu Rumblea.
