Schatrax - 10 (Scatrax) Final instalment in this cult classic series of low-key white labels from Mark and Josh of As It Is. A douplepack without so much as a rubber stamp, the music speaks for itself, with the help of the runout inscriptions. 'Comfort' opens proceedings with a pleasantly Balearic, acoustic guitar-looping 12/8 groove. 'Alien's Journey' is a melancholy and melodic deep house shuffler which reminds me of Polygon Window's 'If It Really Is Me'. 'Heist' loops the Amen breakbeat at house tempo with cheesey organs and a deliberately lo-fi and over-the-top feel. 'Giddy Up' is a repetitive but funky percussion workout in Purpose Maker style, while 'East' is more abrasive but no less kicking. There's also an amusing sample to finish with, but you'll need to buy this yourselves to find out about that. The boys exit with a flourish. Cheap Knob Gags - 5 (Cheap Knob Gags) Aubrey back with a doublepack of schoolboy humour. No suprises, except for the two-minute Sade sample of 'Kisses Ring' (geddit?). The 'proper' tracks cover disco influences ('Felt It With You', 'The Bovril Boulevard', 'Throttle The Bottle') and harder techno pounders ('Big Juan', 'Getting Your Palm Red', 'Adjust Your Set'). Personal favourite is 'At The Crack Of Dawn', with its deep bassline, simple synth hook and building percussion. Great titles too :) DJ Rush - Maniac (DJax) Four tracks of hard jacking house music from Chicago via Holland. 'Groove Sucker' is the standout for me with its Plastikman-esque snare roll mutations and awesomely powerful beats 'n bass. Floor-friendly, cheese-free and absolutely rocking. I don't buy a hell of a lot of this type of gear but this stood out immediately. Top stuff. Ian O'Brien - Tattoo Jazz (4th Wave) UK techno's man of the moment plays his trump card with this long jazzy journey in Mad Mike style. No great surprises, just crisp funky percussion, smooth chords and interesting progressions with jazztastic beard-stroking solos noodling all over the place on top. Quality electronic music from a true musician, in every sense of the word. Ian O'Brien - Intelligent Desert 2 (Ferox) Another EP from the man, but this time in a determinedly experimental style. 'My Favourite Key' is an electro and funk inspired piece with catchy synth hooks and fat breakbeats, and 'Schroedinger's Cat' is a live jazz workout with cool piano soloing and hectic beats. The flip sees him dip into unconventional rhythms and time signatures. Not as immediately accessible as 'Tattoo Jazz' but one which in the long term I'll probably find more rewarding. Downlink - Optimus Prime (Mosaic) Number five in the series, with four tracks. As always with the As It Is stable, quality is guaranteed. 'Is It' kicks things off with Rhodes chords and a subtle disco feel, slow, groovy and mellow. 'Jimmin Around' uses jazz loops which don't always gel perfectly, and 'Arrival' is a stripped-down minimal track with Steve O'Sullivan's trademark percussion and bendy filtered synth loops (for want of a better description). 'Tools 1' finishes the EP off with a simple tech-house groove. Nice. Mark Ambrose - Dream Mode (Solid Groove) A promising three-tracker from one of the newest As It Is recruits. 'Dream Mode' is the aptly-titled a-side with a soft synth pattern caressing the intricate percussion while a moody bassline underpins things. On the flip, 'Colonel's Measure' filters a disco loop and adds all kind of warping synth effects to a solid tech-house backing, while 'Redial' is yet another, erm, solid groove. And watch out for Ambrose and Aubrey on Mosaic 6. More to come later in the week, including new Mills and Moodymann... see ya ___________________________________________________ :::::::::::: t o m c h u r c h i l l :::::::::::: :::::::::::::::: h e a d s p a c e :::::::::::::::: dj/musician/writer/clubber ::::: scene but not herd e: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk :::::::: t: 0976 898514 ___________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 15:00:48 +0100 From: Gojko Adzic Subject: love parade 97 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 15:03:25 +0100 From: "Williams, Derek" Subject: Let the sun shine in your heart - Love parade '97 Hi peeps OK I'm back, sod it, well all good things must come to an end. Pity tho'. This was my second Love Parade, I went last year so I knew roughly what to expect and had no intention of missing this years, so I had a pre-booked ticket to fly out on thursday with BA, on the second day of the strike. Things didn't sound too good, I woke up early on thursday morning listening to Radio 4's "Today" programme telling stories of chaos @ Heathrow. Oh well, I set off in the expectation of spending a few days self-cater in Heathrow. It didn't happen, my flight went crewed by trainees and managers (BTW Lee, I don't like crossing picket lines and using a service provided by "scab" labour, but I didn't have a choice, they refused to refund my ticket or allow me to re-arrange my booking). It got me there although the sterwardess had forgetten her glasses so couldn't find my seat and someone else came around throwing the meal @ us and lockers were left flapping open during take off and ..... Berlin. I've been going there since 1981, the place has changed a bit since then. In fact the city is changing at an unbelievable pace, everywhere is a building site as they remove the legacy of the wall and rebuild the shattered centre. Actually this is bad news, because right in the eye of the building storm are the two highlights of the Berlin scene, the Tressor and the E-werk. Last year the Postdammer Platz building site was looming on the horizon, this year the cranes are looming over the Tressor, sad to say both are doomed as this area is to become the new German seat of government and the men in suits can't put up with scruffy techno clubs next to their nice shiney offices can they? In fact I heard the E-werk is to close next week, so only the Tressor is left. So anyway, thursday night I had planned to meet up with Robin the lurker (Hi Robin) and Milessa from raverG list and we were to go to the E-werk. We arranged to meet in the Schnable bar. Now why can't we have places like this in England? It's only a bar with DJs spinning anything from D&B to techno, but it doesn't shut till early in the morning. Would it really mean the end of British cicvilisation if we had all night bars? We met up and headed for the E-werk, which was closed, so we went to Tressor. Now Tressor is a major club, mind zapping light rigs and crystal clear pumping sound. The first and most obvious difference between this and British clubs was the lack of searches, and this was the first sign I had of how different the techno scene is in Germany. Clubbers are not seen as deviant criminals and rave music is something to be encouraged, unlike in this country where I honestly believe we are heading towards a police state. Anyway, the Tressor was boring. Oh that's not fair, I guess it's just they were playing what I think was the cheesier end of Detroit - or at any rate US - techno. It was OK, but not my first choice. Oh and I bought an asprin. Hum. So, got home to Claudias place quite early, about 6.00am, having taken a cycle ride around the Postdammer platz building site, a very wiered place early in the morning, you've just got to see it to understand what I mean. Friday was "radical rave" night. The radical rave sounded good, it wasn't listed in any of the LP guides or on the net site, some of you might have heard of the "hate parade", it was a part of that. The Hate parade was staged by some ppl who feel that the LP is too commercial - it's sold out - which to some extent is true, it has. Actually, RR was a little un-radical, it was OK, good in fact and cheap, but there was only one room playing, well, German techno. The most interesting thing to see here was the interesting craze which seems to be sweeping Berlin right now, laughing gas. Now laughing gas does not make you laugh, but it does give you a head rush which isn't too bad, but it's very more-ish and does get you really intoxicated and yes, I had a little too much. I won't do that again, the worst spin off being I got totally lost cycling back and ended up in a distant suburb a long way from home. This is the one and only time I have ever jumped a train and not payed my fair (it didn't occur to me honest), but at least you can take bikes on the Berlin U-Bahn. So Satrurday and the day of the parade. Well, I slept through most of it, but I think that was just as well. There were so many ppl - a million I've heard tell and it was a re-run of last years only hotter, with the temperature in the 30s. I got to the Tier Garten around 6.00pm and caught the end of the parade and the start of the parties. Now this is why you really should go to the LP. Never mind the parade, that's so-so, the whole thing really kicks off around midnight, so it's just a matter of finding a party to suit your mood, no great problem. Right next to the Brandonburg gate there was a collection of buses and vans pumping out the most ear pleasing of darkside techno, so I made my way over. This was what in England would have been an illegal rave, except it was in Germany so it wasn't illegal and they didn't sell asprins either. I stayed here till about 3.00 when I decided to go for a walk, so I headed toward the E-werk, half intending to go there. The streets of Berlin were one big rave party, everywhere ppl were dancing and the beats were pumping in the warn night air. Around the Tressor and E-werk was mayhem, thousands of luved up ravers crowding every inch of pavement and tops of buildings. The E-werk was full and there was a huge crush trying to get in, forget it, so I headed back to my darkside rave, by way of the Tressor. The Tressor had an outside party with a light rig to shame Pink floyed, even from outside it was impressive. A little further down the road the "info-box" on Potsdammer platz was pumping out Love radio and another party was in full swing there. Anyway, I returned to my darkside party, and I'm really glad I did. Something like this only happens occasionally, maybe only once in a lifetime. First imagine the location, Brandonburg gate behind, Potsdammer platz in front, the decks and dj framed by tavellers buses with very impressive black backcloths with white logos. Towering over the bus were the Potsdammer cranes, all floodlit against a starfilled sky (yes, you can see the stars in Berlin) and this dark thumping powerfull music hammered it's wonderfull beat, it was impossible not to dance. Then silence. Everyone looked at the dj as the most unnerving, spine chilling and downright evil sound grew from the speakers. No dancing for a minute, everyone stood in silence as note after note of pure blackness rolled over the site. What the hell this tune was I'll never know, but to think some twisted mind could have concieved something like this was scarey enough, I tried to find out but niether I nor the DJ were in communicative mood, but the label had the word "EARTH" on it and a picture of a landscape made of bricks. Bats' recent remarks about the emotion of darkness were proven correct and as a result I am in love with the stuff, no music has ever touched me quite like that tune did. Anyway, the sun came up and ppl drifted away and I left @ about 10.00am and that was Love parade 97. If you were there you should have had a good time, if not, why not? The only thing that really pisses me off is I suspect we could do it a hell of a lot better in this country if we didn't have such a stupid government. Don't miss it next year. "E, aj onda pusti mene i jos ovih `par` ortaka iza mene". I, tako prodje on, a iza njega jos dvadesetsedmorica njegovih pajtosa }:( Pa nedugo zatim dve klinkice (naravno plavuse) prilaze gorili: "E,cao pa gde si ti? Jel` mozemo da udjemo itd.". Naravno, on ih, zaveden santimetrima pudera po njihovim facama, pusta.
