Kada sam neko vece (u sredu) otisao u barutanu zatekao sam gomilu klinaca. Kad sretnem nekog od ljudi sa kojima sam pre par godina skakao k'o lud nekoliko puta nedeljno po raznim klubovima, kaze da smo totalno proterani i da je techno propao... Pravi bedak, zar ne ? I cdj several styles (goa included), and it works great. limits/benefits vary based on what cd player you use. if you user consumer grade cd players, you are severely limited, but you'll have alot more $$ left over. I have a Dennon 2500f which is one of the top-of-the-line players. it's a 2 cd player, and has a remote comtrol console (uses a cable, but can be up to 4 feet from the cd player itself). it has speed adjustment and pitch adjustment that can operate independantly (change pitch without changing speed, change speed without changing pitch, increase speed and actually decrease pitch, etc.) it also has + and - buttons for slight temporary adjustments in speed. it has no-wait start up,you press play, and instantly it plays, most consumer grade have between 1/10 and 1/2 second delay before it starts, mine has 1/100th of a second delay (pretty damn small). Cue is a wonderful feature, I can be previewing a track, and have it return to exactly where I started listening. this is very useful for starting up on the beat. the shuttle wheel can step by as little as 1/75th of a second, and the jog knob (ff/rew) is variable, and a quick snap all the way makes it jump by a full minute. it has a 9 second sampler for each deck, and seamless looping for each as well. there are programable loop points which can be recalled at any time, meaning you can get a killer loop or song start, and save it so you don't have to struggle to get it again the next time you play. pioneer has a cd player that is designed to feel more like you are working with vynil, but I have never used it. there are lower end 2 disc players that have instant-start, pitch-bend (change speed like vinyl, you get the alvin and the chipmunks effect though), cue, jog, and some have shuttle wheels. lower on the spectrum are single disc player that have instant start and pitch bend. at the bottom is your average counsumer grade single cd player. they can play cds, don't have instant-start, and can ff/rew at only one speed. many don't have the option to display "time remaining" which is absolutely required for djing. don't even bother with a changer, you waste alot of time changing cds, and it's clumsy to use. disadvantages to cds: they skip easier than vinyl (playing on a cement floor, or foam underneath can fix skipping). you don't have as fine of control over the speed (cd players have +-16% speed change in increments of .1% the speed range in vinyl is +-15% i think, but with infinitely small increments of change i.e higher precision. you can't "scratch" with cds. you can adjust the speed of a record by touching it, you can push it faster, of use friction to slow it. many dance tunes come out on vinyl before cd. many dance tunes are easier to find on vinyl. Vinyl is more "hands on", which some people really prefer. cds work great for: goa, psy, industrial, techno (not all-inclusive blanked techno, I hope you understand what I mean and don't jump all over me trying to nit-pick what I'mtrying to say), 80s, some disco, jazz, and other older (pre 1970) dance styles. Vinyl is pretty much required for: jungle, drum-n-bass, house, and anything else that needs to be beat-mixed. an ideal setup in my mind, is a 2 cd player, and at least one turn table. the only problem is you then need a 4 channel mixer ($pendy), and a hell of alot of skill. that leaves many more options available to you. find someone you know who has a mixer, borrow it, and scrounge up 2 cd players. fight with that setup for a while before buying anything else. if you like it, offer to provide a few hours of music for a small party of mostly close friends. if you like that, then look into dropping $$ for real gear. things to consider: if you are lucky, you can get a 2500f for about the same price as 2 technichs (sp?) 1200 mkIIs. the 1200s run around $600 each US$, the 2500f runs $1200-1800 US. the pioneer players run around $900 US each (they are single disc players). you can find the lower end 2cd players for $400-600 US, and the single disc (w/ pitch bend and instant start) for $100-200 US. A good mixer will cost a minimum of $150 US. Buy a dj mixer with a crossfader, don't buy a 16 channel mixing console. I'm not going to cover amps and speakers, but for modern dance tunes, good, loud, crisp, tight bass is necessary. call local music stores, ask if they sell dj cd players and mixers. if they do, bring a few cds and ask if you can play with the gear a little. if they say no, don't bother giving them you business. you need to have a store that can answer your questions, and will let you try out the gear. look in the yellow pages under "sound", "lighting" (places that sell concert/theatrical/dj lights often sell dj equipment), and "musical instruments". once you've shopped alot, think really hard about what approach you want to take. do you want to do house parties for just your friends? that requires very little gear. do you want to dj in clubs? get minimal gear since they will have all of the stuff you need. do you want to dj parties for people you don't know, and/or dj in Raves? you'll need good equipment since most won't have cd players for you. once you've decided the $$ range you want to spend, next decide how you want to have your setup. there are several options: 1. card table, small mixer, and 2 cd players, one on each side of the mixer. 2. cdj coffin, mount the mixer in the middle, and 2 cdplayers in foam padded slots below 3. slide-back console. these are a cross between a rack and a coffin, they usually allow for at least one turn table, and have 4-12 rack spaces for cd players. 4. small slant rack. 2-4 rack spaces below (cd player uses 2 spaces), and 8-10 spaces slanted above for mixer, cd controlls, and power-conditioner/light source. set on table or medium size amp-rack. can usually fit in your car. 5. big slant rack. 16-20 rack spaces below , 8-10 slant spaces above for mixer, etc. these are standalone. they are big, heavy, and suceptable to skipping if setup on a wood floor. you don't need a table or anything, they are usually around 4 feet high, and have wheels. they don't fit in most cars, you need a van, sport utility, trailer, station wagon, or big hatch-back. I have one, and I like it, but moving it sucks. I plan on getting a small slant rack and a separte (10-14 slot) amp rack, then putting a block of foam between them. the only problem with the 2 rack with foam method is stability. there is no elegant way to keep the top securely on the foam. Unless you plan on the card-table method, don't get a "scratch" mixer or a "battle board" those are skinny and cheap. they won't fit in a standart 19" rack. again, think out you whole system before you buy anything. If you are going to buy in several steps, get a mixer first, cd players second, rack/console/coffin 3rd, and amp/speakers last. buy as much used as you can. you can always upgrade later if you start making money off of djing. online places to check out: http://www.pro-mix.com http://www.american-dj-supply.com/ http://www.upstairs-records.com I'd suggest only buying something if you've used it first. use the online places for research. read up on stuff, then look for it locally. play with it locally, then compare prices between the local and mail-order. only get mail-order if the price is alot better. gear can get damaged in the mail. it's better to develop a relationship with one or 2 local stores, that way you have local resources for questions, troubleshooting, etc. it's also easier to take back damaged or bad merchandice to a local place than mail-order. - -Devon ------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of INSOMNIA Digest ********************************************** +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ insomnia@dv.co.yu, mail lista o YU tehno sceni +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ -------------------------------------------------------- 95628.9 --
